1. It’s Making Strange Noises

A garage door should hum along quietly. But if yours suddenly screeches, grinds, or bangs, it’s trying to tell you something.

  • A high-pitched screech could mean nylon rollers or hinges are wearing out.
  • A loud bang might mean a spring has snapped – a serious safety issue.
  • Grinding sounds often mean dirt, rust, or broken parts are in the way.

2. It Jerks, Sticks, or Moves Unevenly

A healthy garage door glides smoothly. If yours shudders, sticks halfway, or tilts to one side, something’s off.

  • Tracks might be bent or misaligned.
  • Cables could be fraying or slipping.
  • Worn springs may not be holding the weight correctly.

Ignore it, and the whole door could stop working – or worse, come crashing down.

3. The Door Looks Damaged

Some damage is easy to spot – dents, cracks, rot – but easy to ignore. Don’t.

  • Wooden doors that soften or rot lose their strength and can splinter.
  • Aluzinc doors with big dents are weaker and easier to force open.
  • Rust on fittings, bent hinges, or loose screws might seem minor now, but they get worse over time.

4. The Motor Stops Working

If your garage door won’t respond to the remote, it’s annoying – but it’s also a red flag.

Some motors shut down completely if their battery backup dies, even if the powerhead is still plugged in. The Absolift motor doesn’t have this problem, but its backup battery still needs to charge when the power’s on.

Here’s what else can go wrong:

  • Sudden power outages can cause power surges when the electricity comes back.
  • These surges can damage motors – especially the PC board.

If you have an Absolift motor:

  • Scroll through the settings on the LED screen.
  • If you see an “H,” it might signal a PC board problem.
  • But even if there’s no “H,” the PC board could still be damaged.

5. Your Garage Door is Sagging or Feels Heavy

Here’s a simple test:
Lift your garage door manually halfway and let go.

  • If it stays in place, the balance is fine.
  • If it slams shut or feels too heavy to lift, your springs are probably worn out or need torsioning.

Springs are under immense tension and can snap without warning. When they do, they can cause serious injury or leave your garage door unusable.
